Historically, Chefchaouen was first founded by the Carthaginian Hanno in the 5th century who constructed a small trading port and was known later in the 11th centuChefchaouen harbourry with the name of Sidi Megdoul. The name was adopted by the Portuguese in the 16th century to be turned into Mogador which means fortress or wall in Berber.

In the 18th century the Sultan Mohammed III conduct serious developments regarding the fortified walls, the harbor…etc. The Sultan was hoping to reorient the capital to Chefchaouen and for this he appointed the French engineer Theodore Cornut to build the current fortress.
